Short Profile:

For nearly a century, William Poll has been Manhattan’s supplier of choice for decadent appetizers, hors d’oeuvres, finger foods and dessert experiences.

Located on the Upper East Side, William Poll has been a Yorkville neighborhood staple since it first opened its doors in 1921, building on New York’s reputation for enjoying German and European-style delicacies. Famous for its glamorous finger sandwiches and canapés, the company quickly built its name on the family recipes of its late co-founder, Christine Poll. Partnering with her husband, and the company’s namesake, William Poll, Christine was a pioneer in the gourmet food industry, turning her small shop into a favorite of customers nationwide and across the globe.

Today, Christine and William’s sons, Stanley and James, continue the legacy established by their mother which continues to bring generations of families back for more. The William Poll staff takes pride in crafting foods from scratch. Ranging from finger foods to chicken pot pie and beef bourguignon, they give care to every detail of every dish; quality that this global brand is founded on. Still located on the Upper East Side, even the busiest passers-by have been known to stop and take in the chocolate-dipped meringues and angel cakes beckoning them from the front windows. Once inside, every customer is welcomed by the warmth of large, brass chandeliers that light the intimate interior. Behind the deli glass, each person chooses from the meats and fine cheeses while artisans prepare sandwiches topped by William Poll’s gourmet ingredients. The savvy customers will indulge further and top their visit with William Poll’s famously rich brownies or baklava. And the true connoisseur of fine foods will not forget to pick up William Poll’s classic: potato thins and “Dip Indulgence” for a gourmet midnight snack.

Whether filling and shipping orders from across the oceans to catering holiday affairs in the heart of Manhattan, William Poll continues brings its standards of excellence and complete satisfaction to every customer, treating each like family. It is this attention to even the smallest detail that has not only kept this New York shop open for nearly one hundred years, but also a cultural landmark on a small block on the Upper East Side.

William Poll Classic: Potato Thins and Dip Indulgence

The Potato Thin with a Dip Indulgence is a William Poll classic. Stanley and James start with whole Idaho potatoes, slicing them into not-too-thick and not-too-thin ovals. The brothers cook them in small batches: “Baked, never fried!” Stanley proclaims. After reaching a beautiful dark color and crispness, the chips are given a shake of salt. Every customer can also choose from an assortment of herbs and spices to punch up their chips, including Herbes de Provence, Shallot and Pepper, Jalapeno, and Moroccan Garlic.

But of course, one should take advantage of William Poll’s exclusive Dip Indulgences to pair with their salty snacks. The brothers have available sweet and savory low-fat dips including standards such as Blue Cheese, as well as more adventurous fare such as Cucumber, Smoked Trout, Lobster, Curry and, of course, the famous Watercress dip!

The Baked Potato Thins and Dip Indulgences are packaged in chic, crumble-proof boxes for easy shipping. And if you live in New York, be sure to buy an extra box just for the walk home!
